New Year

12 am Friday 31st December, 2010.

I sit on a black cushioned chair at the loneliest moment of the night, when Im the only one awake at home. My pale finger nails fumble on the white letter keys creating words on a blank screen. The night has collapsed into strange privacy, the buzzing note of the fan above me is suddenly overwhelming, like a voice.

I didn't know I'd feel so alone on the last day of the year, right here between the silence of a sleeping house and the sounds outside the window. Re-visiting this space after a "blog vacation" somehow makes the loneliness special. It seems like the best thing to do as the last chore of the year.

I've spent the last two and a half months doing nothing more than planning a vacation to India and then holidaying with some of my favorite people back home. Not a whole lot of updates on the writing progressometer, so tonight urges for a resolution.

I wish I could write that "I resolve to blog everyday." This is not what I am. Really, I'm much lazier, Im a resolution breaker. But I'm sure sharing this with all of you, my friends will help me stick to a routine.

So here is my idea for this year.

I wish to begin and end each day with the one thing I love to do the most - write.

Outside my window, I hear fire-crackers bursting. Then, the sounds of people shouting, welcoming the new year. Then, the sound of a passing ambulance. Two-wheelers and rickshaws honking. The sounds of people celebrating. Here's wishing you a great year ahead!

Do you have a resolution you want to share?

Best,
Suma.

Happy New Year to you and your loved ones, Suma!

What a wonderful resolution! I'm not much of a resolution person, so I'm just telling myself that I'll be more positive this year, sending only positive thoughts to whomever I'm thinking about :).

So, you had a vacation, too, to India, I see? I returned to blogland today after a two-month vacation, too. Here's hoping we'll all write this year to our hearts' content!

Suma, that would be lovely ... to begin and end the day with writing. I've been thinking and I want to finish the revisions on my novel this year ... but yeah, writing every day is on my agenda as well (it usually happens in the afternoon though).

@Hema : Can't agree more with you on making the resolution part. I think thats easy, the implementation of it can be quite challenging :-)

Wow....that post left me speechless. I knew you had the talent to scribe stories weaven in your poetic narrative style but didn't know your profound love for that art. You sure do possess the gift of words to form a lovely prose that flows freely from your creative mind.

Hope your dream of writing daily doesn't stay as a pipe dream and you do something to turn it into a reality :) !!

Am not huge resolution fan but hope to be better than my previous years in mind, body n soul to spread the joy of being me.
